Pedro José Torres. Chairman

 

Pedro José Torres was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He is son of Pedro Torres and María Ciliberto. Torres lived most of his life in Caracas; then, motivated by his studies, he lived in Bogotá, Madrid and Rome.

He studied from preparatory in the Santiago de León School in Caracas and in the Emil Friedman Institute, graduating with honors. He then studied Law at the Santa María University in Caracas, at the Externado University of Bogotá and at the Law University of Madrid. He finished his academic career among the top five students at the Central University of Venezuela.

Torres’s main business was Real Estate, until he joined the banking and insurance sector in 1997. He has been a major contributor to charitable causes aimed at children in orphanage or abandoned status and people in need in countries in transition to development, in the so-called third world, as well as in general to children and young people suffering from obesity. Since 2009 he resides in the city of New York, where he decided to create and develop the TORRES PICON FOUNDATION, of which he is the President of the Board of Directors.

This foundation implements preventive health promotion programs and promotes the fine arts as an important tool for welfare and improvement of people.

Pedro J. Torres is a member of the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and also participates in the artistic and musical community of Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Museum. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Spanish Repertory and of the Board of Trustees of the Miami Philharmonic. Torres actively participates on Human Rights organizations, the American Ballet Theater and the José Limón Foundation, among others. He is married, with his lifelong wife, his beloved Blanca Cecilia Picón-Febres and has a son and a daughter, Pedro and Cecilia.

Cecilia Picon-Febres de Torres was born in Merida, Venezuela. She has a degree in Art from Los Andes University in Merida, Venezuela, and got a special mayor degree from the Academia de Bellas Artes de Caracas, Venezuela.

 

She worked as the Editor in Chief for the weekly magazine “Mujer-Mujer” in Venezuela and also studied and danced ballet for 20 years.

 

In New York she attended Parson’s Design School as well as Hunter College. She has lived in New York City with her husband and son for the last ten years. Cecilia Picón-Febres de Torres belongs to the Board of Trustees of the Brooklyn Museum, is member of the Chairman’s Council at ABT and is involved in different BAM Art committees. She belongs to the Director’s Council at MoMA and is an active member of the Lincoln Center.

 

Cecilia Picon-Febres de Torres has always worked hard and with inspiration on the promotion and defense of women’s rights through the NGO Torres Picón Foundation” which she co-chairs with her husband Pedro J. Torres. At present, she is working as a Jewelry Designer and she does mixed media with her personal technique. She is a collector of Latin American, Asian and Contemporary Art.
